Sandra Jean Garey, of Akron, passed away January 8, 2014 at the age of 74 in her home, with her children at her side. After a long struggle with chronic illness we are happy to know that she is at rest. Born July 13, 1939 to Robert and Monica Seed, Mom was a gentle and compassionate woman who embraced and passed on the loves of her life to her children. These included being a voracious reader, a fan of Ohio sports teams (winning and losing seasons), a love of vocabulary, a quick wit, days with laughter, nights with games, an eye for the absurd, and roses in the garden. She was often called Mom by her children’s friends and never refrained from providing a stern talking to when any one needed it. She spoke softly and used big words. Living most of her life in Akron, Sandy attended St. Martha Grade School; graduated from St. Vincent High School Class of 1957 and the Akron School of Practical Nursing. She worked at Summa Health System as an LPN, retiring after 25 years of service. She was active for many years at St. Martha Church (Blessed Trinity) as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Monica Seed; brother, Robert Seed; son, Timothy Garey; and daughter, Christine Mesaros. She is survived by sisters, Patricia (Lou) Sovacool Giovanelli, Jacqueline (Robert) Craig and sister-in-law, Diane Seed; children, Jon (Michelle) Garey, Lynn (Steve) Testa, Michelle (Alex) Papp, Jeffrey (Jennifer) Garey, Lisa (Tom) Garey-Holm, and Karen (Jay) Macko and special daughter-in-law, Johnna Lynch Shook; grandchildren, Brandon and Alexander Garey, Steven and Michael Testa, Matthew, Kathryn, Christopher, Sarah and Rachel Alto, Jackie and Hannah Garey-Wysin, Benjamin Garey, Justin, Kenny and David Holm, Eddie and Lauren Cozart, and Alexis Macko; great-grandchildren, Michael Garey, Jacob Garey, and Yani Diamantopoulos; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend gratitude to Dr. Joseph Burick and the staff at Hospice of Summa, especially Rosemary, Ed, and Laura.

Family will be receiving condolences one hour prior to Mass of Christian Burial at Blessed Trinity Church, 300 E. Tallmadge Ave., Akron, on January 18th at 11 a.m. Private burial will be held at a later date at Chestnut Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Summa or NAMI.
