John Braun Obituary

John Joseph Braun II (1942 - 2021)

John J. Braun, age 79, of Hilton Head Island, SC and formerly of Stow, OH died Saturday, August 21, 2021 at The Justin T. Rogers Hospice Care Center in Akron, OH.  John “Jack” was born on March 18, 1942 in McDonald, OH, the son of the late John and Hilda Braun.  Jack was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Laura in November of 2018.

Jack graduated from Kent State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and a Master’s degree in Business Administration.  Jack founded and built a successful architectural firm and in 1986 purchased the Byron R. Barder House on the West side of Akron where he and his partner fully restored the building to earn a place on the National Register of Historic Places.  They established a strong presence in the Akron/Cleveland area and later expanded to add another office in Columbus, OH.  He served throughout his career as a member of A.I.A and contributed to his community through his tenure on the Stow Public Schools Board of Education.  He contributed as a board member to several associations during the course of his life, including his last assignment as the Commodore of the Moss Creek Yacht Club in the community where he resided.

One of his passions was sailing with his wife and family on Lake Erie many summers prior to moving permanently to Hilton Head Island, SC.

After retiring from Braun & Steidl and moving to Hilton Head Island, Jack continued to enjoy many hobbies including boating, fishing, golf, biking, photography, woodworking and spending time with friends.  He was known to spend numerous hours in the garage turning his beloved wooden pens.

Jack is survived by his loving daughters, Lori Lynn Slaman, husband Bill and Wendi Sue Battista, husband Don; sister Susan Daugherty and husband Richard; grandsons Matthew and wife Kelsey, Vincent and fiancée Myranda and Nicholas Battista.  A dedication of life will be celebrated in Hilton Head Island at a later date with family and friends.
