Elia Aiello

Akron--Elia Aiello, 94, passed away on February 21, 2023. She was survived by her brother, Mario Aiello (Akron) and she is preceded in death by her sisters Guiseppina “Pina” Aiello (Akron) and Antonietta Militano (Cantanzaro, Italy). She was the Aunt to Cindy Aiello (Akron) and Teresa, Rosalba and Lello Militano (Cantanzaro, Italy) and the beloved cousin of Pino and Dora Aiello (Bayonne, NJ) and Mimo and Bettina Aiello (San Vito Sull’Ionio, Italy), and Antonietta Bonasera (Rome, Italy).

Elia was born on September 9, 1928, in Centrache, Italy. In 1949, she immigrated to Akron, Ohio, where she worked in the family store. She later attended the University of Akron and went on to become a bookkeeper at Polsky’s Department Store and the Summit County Coroner’s Office, where she remained until her retirement.

She was a deeply spiritual woman, a devoted member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Elia was also an active member of the St. Monica Club, Calabrese Club, and Italian Council.

In her retirement, Elia enjoyed traveling with friends and her belated sister, Pina, to such far away locations as China, Australia, and New Zealand. She also enjoyed gardening and maintaining her yard meticulously--especially her tidy, clean-lined hedges.

Throughout her life, Elia was chosen to be a Godmother to many. She was incredibly supportive of her friends and their families, attending countless weddings, communion, and birthday celebrations. She will be forever remembered for her generosity of spirit.

The family extends its heartfelt appreciation to its extended family, friends, family physician, Dr. John DiSabato, Visiting Angels, and Hospice of Summa. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am Monday at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 83 Mosser Pl, Akron with Father Burba officiating. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Visitation will be 9:30 to 10:30 am at Hennessy Funeral Home 552 North Main Street, Akron. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Anthony Church (stanthonyakron.org).
