Carl Junior Chitwood passed away on December 4, 2022 at Akron City Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Rocky Mount, Virginia on February 14, 1939, and lived his adult life in the North Hill Community of Akron, Ohio.
Carl held a special place in his heart for his faith, his family, and his community. Carl proudly served in the Air Force before moving to Akron, Ohio in 1958. Forever a champion of the North Hill Community, he was an active parishioner at Blessed Trinity Church where he was confirmed into the Catholic faith in 2019. With only an 8th grade education Carl went on to become an entrepreneur, establishing his own business B & C Glass. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus and an avid bowler and golfer, which he was able to enjoy up until this last year.
Preceded in death by his father, David Chitwood, mother, Della C. Jones (Rigney), sister Aurelia Ann Fields (Chitwood) and brother, Jewell Chitwood all of Rocky Mount, Virginia. Carl is survived by his sister, Nadine Goode and Euell Chitwood of Rocky Mount, VA. He is lovingly held deep in the heart and memory of his companion and best friend, Sheila Chitwood, his daughter Carla Herbet, son, James Chitwood, daughter, Nadine DeSimone and son and daughter-n-law, Jason and Ashley Chitwood; He will forever be lovingly remembered by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Steve and Lana Rossi. He is survived by 5 grandchildren Christopher (Elisabeth) Herbert, Joseph Herbert, Nicholas Herbert, Sabrina Fate, and Vincent DeSimone. He leaves in legacy 4 great-grandchildren, Logan Herbert, Cameron Herbert, Zachary Herbert and Cooper Lee Vanfossen. He never failed to stay in touch with his many beloved nieces, nephews, and extended family. Carl also leaves behind many dear friends, and people he met along the way. Lastly, he never met a stranger. Next time you are standing in line at the grocery store, waiting to be seated at a restaurant or maybe even swimming in the ocean, please stop and greet a stranger in his memory.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 am Friday at Blessed Trinity Church, 300 E. Tallmadge Ave. Akron. Friends will be received from 3 to 7 pm Thursday at Hennessy Funeral Home (Corner of York and Main) 552 N. Main St. Akron.
