Gertrude “Gert” “Trudy” Winter (Costas), 88, died peacefully on September 24, 2017 surrounded by the love of her family after bravely battling a long illness.  She was born in Akron on June 5, 1929 to parents, Francis and Margaret Simon. She lived most of her life in the Akron/Canton area.

Gertrude and her sister Jean, late brother Richard and late cousin Vernon were lovingly raised by their Grandma "Ma" and Aunt Amy.  Gert was a proud member of the choir at Akron Buchtel High School.  She spent some of her younger years in Miami, Florida living with her mother.  In 1951, she returned to Ohio to happily marry her childhood friend and neighbor, George Costas. Together, they were blessed with five beautiful children.  After George’s death, Gert put herself through secretarial school and Toastmasters which helped her gain employment at St. Bernard’s Rectory.  She relentlessly worked in order to be able to support her family and put her children through St. Sebastian’s School.  She eventually married for a second time to Wayne Winter and was a devoted wife until his passing. She ended her career as a product ambassador at Sam’s Club. Her family and co-workers were consistently amazed with her charisma and genuine passion for her job.   Later in life, she liked to be called by her childhood nickname of Trudy.

She was a strong woman with intense energy, a true fighter and advocate for her family, overcoming any obstacles she faced along her journey.   Her kindness, compassion, and beautiful smile planted seeds into the hearts of all those that crossed her path.  Gertrude was a caregiver of the elderly, a strong activist in political movements, and provided an incredible amount of support and inspiration to her children and her grandchildren.  She enjoyed gardening, holiday get-togethers, beating everyone in euchre, and reading the Bible. She never missed a chance to cheer on Lebron James in a Cavs game.

Trudy is survived by her children, Pamela Goehler, Gary (Sandy) Costas, Richard (Diane) Costas, Robert Costas, Trudy Bachmann, and former son-in-law, Edward Bachmann; seven grandchildren, Brian, Michael (Sherry), Andrew, Carrie (Donald), William (Christina), Emily, and Hannah; and eight great-grandchildren, Morgayne, Lucy Belle, Carmen, Annabelle, William, Machenzie, Kaylee, and Marissa.

The family would like to thank the caring staff of The Laurels of Massillon and Crossroads Hospice for their excellent care of our loved one.  We were so comforted in knowing that they came to love our mom and grandmother as if she were a part of their own family.

We were blessed to have known and loved her.  We are left with the warmth of her spirit and are comforted by the knowledge that she is at peace in the arms of her Savior. We look forward to the day when we will see her again.

A Private Memorial Service will take place at the convenience of the family.  Memorial donations may be made to any Alzheimer’s or Dementia research foundation of your choice.
